Re-Elect Councillor Tanya Foubert
I had zero hesitation in early January as I sought the signatures needed to submit my nomination papers to run as a councillor in the 2025 municipal election.
Why wait when I know with all my heart that this is the work I was meant to do in my community? Public office and public service are not roles everyone is suited for. But after 15 years as a journalist in my hometown, where I was born and raised, I am uniquely qualified and situated to be a leader for Canmore.
I am proud of the work I have done over the past three and a half years and the significant learning and growth I have achieved. Having contributed to setting strategic and policy direction as part of this past council, I know what it takes to be an effective councillor.
Nothing happens at the council table without the support of your colleagues. Learning to work together with a diverse group of people has been an enriching experience. With the support of my council colleagues, I have successfully pushed for the following initiatives:
Establishing a new council committee to review council remuneration each term independently;
Making the Safe Park program permanent to provide support to those living in vehicles each summer;
Maintaining a reserve for Paid Parking revenues to be directly invested back into downtown transportation and vibrancy;
Increasing funds available to non-profits through grants and micro-grants;
Creating conversation around the circular economy and the creation of a zero waste coordinator position;
Increased and appropriate regulation of tourist homes in our community’s established neighbourhoods;
Replacing the New Year’s Eve fireworks display with a light art installation;
Hiring a governance consultant to provide independent CAO performance reviews, governance self-assessments and check-in processes, and coaching;
Elimination of the Environmental Advisory Review Committee, which added unnecessary processes and delays to development applications;
Advocated for improved and more efficient processes throughout the organization with a focus on development permit processing and meeting the requirements of the Municipal Government Act;
Served four years on the Bow Valley Regional Transit Services Commission and helped advocate for regular, reliable, safe and free public transit in Canmore – including establishing a new Route 12!
I am a lifelong learner. I have been privileged to attend as many learning opportunities as possible over my term in office. That includes the following:
Achieving my Municipal Elected Leaders Certificate as part of the Elected Officials Education Program;
Ran for the Alberta Municipalities board of directors to represent Towns South in 2024;
Sat on the ABMunis Environment and Sustainability Committee for two years;
Appointed to ABMunis Governance Committee for 2024-25;
Member of the Alberta Municipal Climate Leadership Caucus.
I would like your support as I seek a second term on Canmore town council. If you want to support my campaign financially or want a lawn sign, please email info@tanyafoubert.com for more information.
